Sports for Senior Pictures
If you think about the hours your student spends at practice, what percentage of your high schooler’s career has been inside the gym, on the court, or on the field? On average, high school student-athletes in the U.S. typically spend 2-3 hours per day in practice during their sports season. During their waking hours. Students in sports dedicate about 12-19% of their day to practice during the sports season.
For student athletes, sports are more than just a hobby—they’re a defining part of their high school experience. Incorporating sports into senior photos is the perfect way to celebrate their hard work, dedication, and achievements. Showcasing your passion makes your senior photos personal and memorable.
Why Incorporating Sports Adds a Unique Personal Touch
Your senior photos should reflect who you are at this significant moment in your life. For athletes, sports represent not only physical skills but also the discipline, teamwork, and commitment that have shaped their high school experience. By bringing elements of their sport into their senior photos, we’re telling the story of their journey as an athlete, both on and off the field.
These photos capture what makes them unique as student-athletes. Whether celebrating a hard-fought championship or simply wanting to capture the spirit of your favorite sport, sports-themed senior photos offer a great way to showcase your student’s passion.
Creative Ideas for Incorporating Sports in Senior Photos

Here are some ways we can do sports senior pictures:
- Action Shots: Dynamic, in-the-moment shots of them doing what they love. This is a favorite because it brings a certain level of realness out. From their true facial expressions to their unique mannerisms.
- On Location: This is a pretty obvious suggestion, but I think it’s lacking from some senior photos; shooting on your actual court, arena, or field is going to make the images feel more authentic and personal. They’ll look back years later at these photos and show their own kids: “see, this is the field I got my first home run”.
- In Uniform: Wearing a sports uniform instantly connects their senior photos to their athletic identity. Whether it’s their varsity team jersey, your warm-up gear, or even a custom-designed uniform, these outfits represent hours of practice and hard work. It’s a great way to honor their sport in a meaningful and visible way.
- Sports Equipment: Props like a football, baseball bat, lacrosse stick, or even a pair of running shoes can be incorporated into your shoot. We can get creative with how you pose with these props—whether you’re standing confidently with your gear or seated in a more relaxed, contemplative pose.
- Trophy or Medal Shots: If you’ve won awards, why not show them off? Medals, trophies, and championship banners can add a personal, celebratory touch.
Behind-the-Scenes Moments: We can also fake the quieter, pre-game moments, such as lacing up cleats, stretching, or adjusting your gear. These shots offer a behind-the-scenes look at what it feels like before a big game. It also feels much more real to have a few of these fake candid shots.
Examples of Athletic Senior Portraits

One of my favorite shoots to date was with Alyssa, who incorporated her passion for Ultimate Frisbee, rock climbing, snow skiing, and mountain biking into her senior session. We shot in two parks around Minneapolis, capturing a mix of action shots and posed images that highlighted her competitive spirit and love for adventure. Alyssa’s shoot perfectly demonstrated how incorporating hobbies and sports into a senior photo session can make it more personal and unique. You can see more examples from that shoot here.
Luke’s senior session was perfect because we had plenty of time to capture stunning outdoor images with natural light AND we spent multiple hours at the pool photographing him diving and swimming, highlighting his passion for the sport. Capturing Your Sporty Senior
Because of the way I operate, no two shoots are the same. This is not a cookie-cutter senior studio, we have the ability to make all your dreams come true! In addition to speaking on the phone with you and your student getting to know you both and what you’re looking for, I do a second consultation at your home or at my studio. During this second consult, we’ll talk about all the possibilities and get down to the nitty gritty details of outfits, location,s and products. This allows me to guide my seniors in sports through the process to ensure they feel excited, comfortable, and confident at their shoot.
Why Book Early for Your Senior Sports Photoshoot?
Sports schedules can be hectic, so it’s important to book early to secure your senior photoshoot date. Between practices, games, and competitions, your calendar fills up fast! Booking early ensures we have enough time to plan out the perfect session and make sure everything, from your uniform to the location, is ready and available.
Additionally, Minnesota’s weather can be unpredictable, so planning your session in the right season, before or after your sports season, can ensure we capture the best possible conditions for your outdoor or on-location shoot.

Celebrate Your Senior’s Sports Journey
Senior photos should reflect your student’s individuality, and for athletes, incorporating sports into their senior photos is a no-brainer. It allows them to celebrate their achievements, passion, and memorialize what they spent so much time doing throughout their youth and teens
